The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship develops highly skilled support professionals who play a central role in shaping learning, inclusion, and wellbeing. Apprentices learn how to make a direct, positive difference to pupils who need support the most, particularly those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

This programme equips staff with strategies to deliver targeted interventions, remove barriers to learning, and collaborate effectively with teachers, SENCOs, and wider pastoral teams.

Included Modules:

• Inclusion & values: This module explores the principles of inclusion and equity that shape effective SEND practice. Apprentices reflect on how beliefs, bias, and values influence pupil experience and learn strategies to champion inclusive approaches across their setting.

• Legal & ethical frameworks: Apprentices develop confidence in navigating SEND legislation, statutory guidance, and school policies. The module focuses on balancing rights, responsibilities, and ethical considerations to ensure safe, compliant, and effective support.

• Planning & curriculum: This module supports apprentices to collaborate with teachers and adapt curriculum delivery for diverse needs. Learners use their SEND expertise to help all pupils access learning and engage meaningfully with the curriculum.

• SEND excellence: Apprentices deepen their understanding of the broad range of SEND needs and learn how to model outstanding support. The module focuses on raising the standard of provision and embedding best practice across the school.

• Classroom assessment: This module develops skills in observing and assessing pupil progress to inform timely interventions. Apprentices learn how to provide constructive feedback to pupils, teachers, and families, supporting effective learning outcomes.

• PedTech: Apprentices explore how technology can enhance SEND provision. The module covers using assistive tools to personalise learning, promote independence, and integrate digital solutions into everyday classroom support.

• Behaviour & wellbeing: This module focuses on understanding the drivers behind behaviour and supporting emotional regulation. Apprentices learn strategies to create calm, consistent environments that promote resilience and wellbeing for pupils with additional needs.

• Powerful partnerships: Apprentices build strong relationships with families and act as a key link between home and school. The module also develops confidence in working with professionals and contributing to Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews.

• Lead, coach & grow: This module prepares apprentices to take the lead in SEND support and share expertise with colleagues. Learners reflect on their own development and build coaching skills to help others improve their practice.

End Point Assessment:

• Observation with Questions: An expert watches you in your teaching environment and asks questions about your methods.

• Professional Discussion: A structured 90 minute discussion with an examiner to showcase your skills using a portfolio of your real work.
