What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is when an apprentice or existing staff member completes a professional recognised programme alongside their role at school or trust to improve their knowledge, practice and confidence.

Any staff employed by your school or trust and works as part of your team can complete an apprenticeship, and it doesn't affect their salary or working hours. Apprenticeships allow you to grow your own talent and fill skills gaps.

At MATAA, we champion school apprenticeships, drive high-quality MAT-led training and foster collaboration across the education sector.

What About Funding?

The apprenticeship levy is a mandatory UK tax that schools and trusts pay to help fund apprenticeship training.

This money goes into a dedicated pot that can be used to pay for approved apprenticeship training in England, supporting both new recruits and existing staff who want to develop their skills. If levy funds aren’t used within a set period, they expire and are then redirected to support apprenticeship training elsewhere in the system.

If you’d like to learn more or need support with an apprenticeship levy transfer...
