Transforming Teacher Recruitment: How the Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeship Strengthens School & MAT Pipelines

Oct 14
2 min read

Finding and keeping high-quality teaching talent remains one of the greatest operational challenges for schools and Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs). Traditional initial teacher training (ITT) routes don't always align with the operational realities of modern classrooms, nor do they always offer a practical career path for existing support staff who already know your school culture.

The Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeship (Initial Teacher Training + QTS) offers a sustainable, levy-funded solution. Designed to combine immersive classroom practice with formal teacher qualification, this route helps schools grow their own talent while maximising levy utilisation.

Why MATs and Schools are Turning to Apprenticeships

Rather than relying solely on external recruitment drives, leading trusts are embedding Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeships into their long-term workforce planning.

  • Maximising the Apprenticeship Levy: Fully funded up to £9,000 per apprentice, this route enables schools to reinvest their levy pots into core instructional capacity without placing extra pressure on general school budgets.

  • Building from Within: It offers a clear progression pathway for experienced Teaching Assistants, Cover Supervisors, and Unqualified Teachers who already possess degree-level qualifications and proven classroom management skills.

  • Retention and Continuity: Apprentices remain embedded in your school community throughout their training, delivering immediate value in the classroom while absorbing your trust's specific pedagogy and values.

High-Quality Pathways via MATAA Partners

Through the Multi-Academy Trust Apprenticeship Association (MATAA), schools and trusts can access established, high-impact Level 6 Teacher ITT pathways delivered by leading trust-led providers:

Leigh Institute (KMT)

  • 12 to 18 months

  • Level 6 Teacher + QTS

  • Flexible, school-led training tailored for diverse secondary and primary settings.

Spencer Apprenticeships

  • 12 months

  • Level 6 Teacher + QTS

  • Accelerated Initial Teacher Training rooted in evidence-based classroom practice.

How to Get Started

  1. Audit Existing Staff: Identify strong internal candidates, such as TAs, cover staff, or subject specialists holding a relevant degree, who are ready to take the step into qualified teaching.

  2. Review Levy Availability: Work with your finance or HR team to confirm your available Apprenticeship Levy funds or transfer options.

  3. Connect with MATAA: Explore full course specifications, entry criteria, and provider details directly on the MATAA Initial Teacher Training Portal.

By adopting a strategic approach to Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeships, your school or trust can secure a resilient, high-performing teaching workforce built on proven internal talent.
